Kiki Dufault

I studied painting at the San Francisco Art Institute with Bruce McGaw, Sam Tchakalian and Ivan Madjrakoff as well as landscape painting with John Dubrow at the New York Studio School in N.Y.C.

I am most drawn to the figure and the landscape. Each painting develops through a series of spontaneous action, and the figure and landscape evolve out of this process. I often approach a painting without a plan and through the spontaneous movement of paint and mixing of color, the painting evolves. And through this movement of color and form I become the vehicle for a certain dialogue to unfold;  it moves through space and time and action as a reflection of my inner landscape. These things resolve and shift in the process. I approach a landscape or a figurative work in the same manner I do an abstraction; sometimes it requires a lot of paint, or the total destruction of that very image that was first emerging, to arrive at the final resting place, where the dialogue of color is complete and it resonates in the pause. This pause evokes a sense of timelessness in the process. Painting for me remains an ongoing journey and an exploration of that which can never be fully defined. Mark Rothko said it well:

“We are dealing with the verities of time and space, life and death, the heights of exaltation and the depths of despair.”
